I wish there was more information about this photo. Can't figure out where it was taken. Don't know where Drive-In Liquors was located. It's one of the oldest photos in the collection.

UPDATE: Several e-mailers report that this store was at East 21st Street and Keely Avenue at the very east end of 21st Street.

Mercy Gulch Day
July 7, 1961

Does Merced still celebrate Mercy Gulch Day? Looks like a lot of fun. They would throw people in the "hoosegow" and have friends bail them out, all in the name of charity, of course.  Love the "Mixatorium" in the background.

Jesse Chenault is the copy desk chief at the Sun-Star and a former staff photographer. The purpose of this blog is to share photos from the newspaper's archives that hopefully spur a discussion about our area's history, photography or the events, people and places pictured here. Feel free to log in and contribute information about the pictures. He'll try to give as many details as he can about names, dates, places but some of the information is fairly sketchy. E-mail him at jchenault@mercedsun-star.com. Find recent content on the main index or look in the archives to find all content.
